Graduate Certificate in Basic Medical Sciences

Program Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Basic Medical Sciences is a broadly based, interdisciplinary program providing education in the core biomedical disciplines. The curriculum is designed for individuals who wish to improve, or change, their educational background in order to fulfill career goals, particularly with regard to admission to medical, dental, or other biomedical professional programs. The graduate certificate program is appropriate for individuals with a bachelor's degree in academic disciplines including, but not limited to, biology, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences or other biomedical disciplines.

In this one (1) year program, students benefit from expert instruction in a curriculum based on foundational science coursework that helps supplement their undergraduate coursework and prepare them for medical school.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Completed medical school prerequisites
    • At least two semesters of biology
    • 4 semesters of chemistry (general chemistry I & II and organic chemistry I & II)
    • two semesters of physics

 

Curriculum and Degree Requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Basic Medical Sciences will require completion of 16 credits in BMS core courses with an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater. While not all courses listed are mandatory, courses must be taken in three different disciplines (based on course identifier). All course work must be completed in accordance with the regulations of the Graduate School and the School of Medicine governing graduate scholarship and degrees.

COURSEWORK

One CORE course from a minimum of 3 different disciplines (e.g. BMB, I/M, MGG, etc) must be chosen from the following. Some of these BMS CORE courses are related, but not identical, to medical school basic science courses.

  • CB 7210 Fundamentals of Cancer Biology* (4 credits)
  • I/M 7010 Fundamentals of Immunology (2 credits)
  • I/M 7020 Fundamentals of Microbiology (2 credits)
  • I/M 7030 Fundamentals of Virology (2 credits)
  • MGG 7010 Molecular Biology and Genetics* (4 credits)
  • BIO 6000 Molecular Cell Biology I * (3 credits)
  • PHC 7010 Introduction to Pharmacology (4 credits)
  • PHC 7410 Principles of Toxicology (3 credits)
  • PSL 7010 Basic Graduate Physiology Lecture I (4 credits)
  • PSL 7030 Basic Graduate Physiology Lecture II (4 credits)
  • PYC 7010 Basis of Neural Sciences I-Mechanisms and Molecules (3 credits)
  • BMS 6550 Medical Anatomy for Health Professionals (4 credits)

* may require instructor/coordinator approval

To graduate, students must complete 16 credits and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Students will have up to 3 years to finish all program requirements.

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis
  • All completed applications receive full consideration
  • Admitted students must confirm their intention to enroll by the specified deadline in their acceptance letter
